Russian Conference – Kirsten’s Account

Our day in Oxford on Tuesday managed to perfectly balance being intellectual with having fun with languages. In particular, we were introduced to new methods of translation between Russian and English such as back translation, where a translation of an originally English work is translated back into English. This allowed us to compare the Russian and English versions more closely, and we were able to critically explore the ways different languages convey different emotions and descriptions, as well as the inadequacies of translation in attempting to fully convey the idiosyncrasies of individual languages. Our back translations showed that while the main themes and ideas carried across languages well, the subtleties were much more difficult to accurately convey. Overall, it was an incredibly interesting exercise that showed us the value of being able to understand material in the original language.
